Lorelei Nicoll, Council newbie

District 4 (Cole Harbour)

Cell: 478-2705
Grade this year: C-
Grade last year: N/A

Lorelei Nicoll replaces the absolutely horrendous Harry McInroy, the repeat “F” councillor who retired last year, and for that alone Nicoll should gain the eternal gratitude of the people of Cole Harbour.

For her part, Nicoll is gracious, perhaps to a fault. As a council newbie, she’s not moved up the learning curve as quickly as I’d like to see. But she has good instincts---she understands, and complains about, the problems transit users have in moving around within Cole Harbour, as opposed to simply commuting into downtown and back. Now she needs to take that complaint and do something about it, but it’ll call for wheeling and dealing to get her fellow councillors on board, and knocking some staffers’ heads around a bit. Gotta lose some of the charm and learn to play hardball, see.

Otherwise, Nicoll hasn’t yet made a substantive mark, or outlined a clear ideology. Partly that’s a mirror of her suburban district, which is itself a little unclear about what it’s about---what Cole Harbour needs, after the sad abandonment of the McInroy years, is a champion with a vision of what Cole Harbour is. Nicoll’s assignment is to become that leader; it’s too early to say whether she’s up to the task.
