Lord of the Coven Ring
Marigold Santos marries her Filipino heritage and the physical demands of boxing in this collection of watercolours.

Call it sporty art. Marigold Santos finds the perfect blend of her Filipino roots and physical expression in Coven Ring, exposing the frailty, skill and beauty of boxing through her large, watercolour paintings. The colours and textures of the pieces give a living portrayal of sport. The blue and brown strokes on the punching bag in "Stand-in" makes it look worn. Artifacts of boxing are shown through the multi-coloured boxing belt and yellow wrappings on the gloves in "Talismans." The clear standout of the exhibit is "Encounter," where Santos displays the mythology of the sport. Towering in the room are two weary, determined fighters in the heat of battle, their epic battle is fought in a remote place high above the ground. One fighter is broken with visible breaks in his exposed foot while the other is on his last legs as he stands on stilts to keep heavy. Coven Ring reminds us boxing is truly a sport of legend.
