Re: “The struggle of a Muslim woman of colour in Halifax

I dare say, Joe Mac, that if you walked down Spring Garden Road in your jock strap, people would wonder what planet you came from.

Re: “How this city almost killed me

"I pressed the button and stepped out, assuming the car was far enough to stop." Don't step out into moving traffic. Ever. You don't know what's going on with that driver -- are they distracted? Do they see you even if they aren't? Are they sneezing at that particular moment? Seriously, if the cars aren't stopped, don't go there. It doesn't matter whether it's right or wrong, the pedestrian will inevitably lose. Please oh please, walkers, don't assume.

Re: “A stadium is necessary for Halifax growth

Because spending money on a stadium is a waaaaaaaaay better idea than, say, the film industry. I know I know...I hear it already..."But the pope and the Dali (sic) Lama, Linda! It's not just sports, it's for our spiritual progress too! And and and....lacrosse!" *sits back in chair, face palming...*

Re: “Political calculus and the film tax credit cut

This baby boomer went back to school and got a degree. I graduated at age 53 and now have a student loan to pay back...I guess my dream of going to grad school in this province is being eroded. Also, my 21 year old son who graduated from the NSCC screen arts program last year is affected by this budget. His desire was to start up a production company here in Nova Scotia and direct films...but I guess this government doesn't want his potential tax dollars either. So you see, my family is affected at two levels by this budget. Ryan, I feel for you. At least I have some limited means but I wonder just how the hell young people make a go of it. Strength and honour.

Re: “The shame of slut-shaming

For the first time in this whole discussion, someone finally made such insightful commentary as to make me cry with relief. I've not always agreed with you, Tim, but kudos for this very necessary discourse. Thank you.

Re: “Who is running for council in District 3: Dartmouth South—Eastern Passage?

I don't understand why this race is expected to be nasty. It's not a race at all. Jackie Barkhouse is so appreciated for her work both in City Hall and out of it. She is a pro-active kind of person who looks at community building in partnership with its citizens. I don't know much about Karsten except that he is not Jackie Barkhouse, frankly. Jackie is approachable, energetic, and plucky enough to stand up to status quo decision-making. She is a people person to the n'th degree. She ASKS for citizens' opinions regularly and takes comments into account seriously. She will advocate for what's right, not just for what's right for city hall bureaucrats. In all my 30-odd years of voting, I have never encountered anyone more devoted to her job as a public representative.
