To the editor,
As usual, Lezlie Lowe nails it ("Green bulb, red light," May 17). When I got the "How many Nova Scotians does it take to change a light bulb?" card in my mailbox, my immediate mercenary response was that it would cost me more to drive out to Bayers Lake than I'd save by installing two CFL bulbs. Ms. Lowe reminded me that there's also an environmental impact (carbon dioxide emissions from driving) and an economic impact (Home Depot is a US-owned big box store). So who is behind this pathetic excuse for environmental activism? Why, none other than Heather Foley Melvin, the president and CEO of Conserve Nova Scotia. Surely you remember Heather—her controversial appointment by premier Rodney MacDonald was met with serious questions about her qualifications and charges of blatant political patronage. Given this and other similar fiascos, maybe the question we should all be asking is "How many Nova Scotians does it take to change a government?"
