Letters to the Editor

I am concerned about the excessive vandalism and arson that persists in the Community of Herring Cove. The properties all around us and now ours was set on fire. There were less than 10 minutes from our house catching on fire. The local neighbors helped us put the fire out before the fire department arrived. As they were finishing putting out the embers, the fire marshal stated that they have been plagued with the kids setting MORE fires then usual this year. This youth behavior has been persisting for years. Many of the local community have been working with the police and politicians to identify the main offenders and address the issue. All of their efforts have been castrated. It is sad that such widespread crime can persist even when the identities of the offenders are known. The HRM allows these youth to serve as an example for the future generations. I call upon the HRM to take action against the lack of respect of the youth and their criminal activities. It only serves to detract from a growing community. Speaking with the police on several occasions, they have stated nothing can be done unless there are witnesses. Several cases with witnesses were sent to the police but nothing ever happened. Speaking with the police extensively also revealed that even with offenders identified, there is little that they are willing to do. So I am extremely concerned that the HRM is unwilling to take active measures to address these problems, either in a penal or proactive manner. We are sick of the "our hands are tied" approach. The HRM needs to take ownership of this problem that they are allowing to persist.
