So, this morning I returned to my car, about 45 minutes delayed and knowing I was over my 2-hour limit. Imagine my astonishment when I saw that the fine on my ticket was $50, or $80 if not paid in 60 days. I called the city thinking there was an error only to find out the fines were increased last August. I wonder what on earth would lead our city leaders to fleece our citizens in this way. As a student this was hard enough to swallow, but I wondered how a single parent family, or a senior with a fixed income could possibly swallow a $50 fine out of nowhere. I recognize I deserved a ticket, but $50? Seriously Mayor Kelly, what is up with that! People are getting mugged walking innocently down the street and those responsible get nothing but a slap on the wrist. But park for an extra 45 minutes and it's a serious offense! Something is backwards here. I can only imagine that the excess income must go to commonwealth games bids, useless surveillance cameras, or maybe "business" class flights around the world.
