Letters to the Editor

Good morning, I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing in the hopes that you will be able to help out with an injustice that took place this past Saturday night in front of Sicilian Pizza, on Pizza Corner, in front of at least fifty witnesses, and that was captured on film and has been posted on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0swo6YcuXE

(this video can also be seen by searching "Halifax four on one" on YouTube)

The video is muddy and doesn't show the beginning of the altercation. However several witnesses have confirmed the following: Scott (the victim) was standing on the side of the road eating a slice of pizza. There was a brief exchange of words with the police before four of said HRM police officers rushed him, and beat him to the ground with clubs and fists. Scott did not fight back, but simply struggled to cover his mid-section from the assault, this part is visible in the video.

If you listen to the audio, you can hear the crowd jeering at the police, they are passionately responding to the unjustified attack, and the unfair violence. Most importantly, the police seemed to be aware of the illegality/questionable morality surrounding their attack, as they tried to confiscate the camera phone from the young man who filmed the video.

Although Scott was merely eating a slice of pizza along with dozens of other bar-goers, and at no point throughout the altercation did he fight back, the police have charged him with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. Upon picking Scott up, and putting him into the back of the paddy wagon without reading him his rights, searching him or telling him why they were arresting him, they took him into holding where they further beat him while he was in their custody. He was not permitted to contact his lawyer, although he has now been pinned with the two charges. Scott was not arrested at the scene, as you can see in the video, he was simply beaten, picked up, put in the squad car and taken to the police station. At no point was he read his rights, let alone did they do so before taking him away. To the best of my lay-person’s understanding of the law, the police MUST read a captor their rights and put them under arrest, before removing them from the scene. If it is of any interest to The Coast, I have detailed photos of the outcome of the attack, including huge cuts to his face, arms and legs, black eye, broken nose, massive welts and swelling from excessive club usage. And so it is with this that I ask you, The Coast, to help call out to people who may have witnessed this injustice, around 3:00 am on Sunday July 13th, to come forward and speak out against the Halifax Regional Police Force, denouncing them for this unnecessary violence. This is not the first time I have heard of such an incident, however this may be the first time we hold documented proof of the police brutalities. These are the kind of events that scar and tarnish the reputation of what is, in my opinion, an otherwise safe and hospitable city. If anyone has any information, or would be willing to testify as to what they witnessed, please contact me. Anything would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can offer.Sincerely yours,James(902) 233-5075
