Iron stomachs only

If you don’t have an iron stomach, you should probably miss John Hillcoat’s Lawless, a prohibition-era story of three Bondurant brothers’ bootlegging ventures in Virginia. The Bondurants run the town until a deputy from Chicago (Guy Pearce) arrives, wanting a cut of the action, inciting bloodshed to get his way. Forrest (Tom Hardy), the “invincible” ringleader of the trio, delivers a series of mumbled grunts in place of dialogue, his younger brother, Jack (Shia LaBeouf), tries to live up to him and their other brother, Howard (Jason Clarke), is too busy getting drunk to be a real character. Based on a true story, Lawless is entertaining viewing, but really is a series of fights strung together with romance (Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska as Forrest’s and Jack’s beaus). At least it’s a chance to see Gary Oldman as gangster Floyd Banner, shooting up a storm, however briefly. Otherwise, brace yourself for gore, including testicles in a mason jar of moonshine.
