Pop culture fans don't need to travel past the Rockies to enjoy KRAZY! The Delirious World of Anime+Comics+Video Games+Art, an exhibition at Vancouver Art Gallery running until September 7. Although the institution, which invited six curators to select works (including Seth, Art Spiegelman and Tim Johnson---who directed the famous 3D Homer segment of The Simpsons' Halloween Special), has come under fire for ignoring local comic artists and Canadian icons like Superman creator Joe Shuster, it's refreshing to read a book that makes serious connections between contemporary art and our pervasive visual culture, and doesn't classify itself as high or low art. Of course, it's a gorgeously designed book---bright colours, plenty of images and a perfect size for handling. Each of the seven sections is broken into easily digested and accessible essays by the curators about their favourite works. And if you can't determine what makes great manga or anime, let alone place it within Japanese culture (guilty as charged), KRAZY! is a beautiful primer for complex art forms. Plus, there aren't too many books where you'll find Wallace and Gromit, Daniel Clowes, Pac-Man, Buzz Lightyear and Claes Oldenburg all sharing space.
