Katy Perry’s Part of Me goes about as deep as her costumes, keeping things sparkly and bright. We follow Perry on her world tour for a year, flitting back and forth through her past—her rise to fame from a religious family, her struggles staying signed to a record label—to her present—onstage spectacles and gushy meet and greets with fans. It’s a strange hybrid of what I imagine Perry’s live-on-tour movie would look like, and a weird attempt at veracity, which fails miserably. We know she ends things with her husband, comedian Russell Brand, but we never get his side of the story. We’re shown only the positive, and even when there’s an attempt at insight, it stops short and transitions to another concert scene. It’s really more “reality” television than documentary—it probably won’t convert any new Perry fans, but it might satiate those already smitten.
