Jon Epworth

Soul Mange (Leutonia)

Inexplicably my iTunes went from “Afraid,” the last track on Jon Epworth’s Soul Mange, into GBH’s “Diplomatic Immunity.” For a second I was convinced that this might be the most eclectic Jon Epworth release ever. Alas, there’s no street punk to be found and while that may disappoint the spiky-haired fan contingent, there’s enough on here to satisfy those who love a good Black Crowes inspired jam. That may seem dismissive, but it isn’t intended as such. The songs on Soul Mange inhabit a Yes meets Fishbone realm and that, coupled with Epworth’s vocals, set this apart from some of the dreck out there.
