Prime ministers attending pride parades is an important symbol, but it's important to remember that Justin Trudeau is a politician, and not part of the LGBT community. Allies are welcome (and encouraged!), and the best way to be an ally is to help those that need to be seen and heard do just that. Politicians, especially those that are not members of the LGBT community and those who are not taking risks on our behalf should be conscious of how much space they take up.
There are really important LGBT organizations and projects that deserve attention, such as the Cape Breton Ally Centre which has been struggling with federal funding cuts, The Magic Project, trans people struggling for better health care access, two-spirit people struggling for reconciliation, etc. Consider giving them a donation or volunteering some time with them!
I'm excited that Gary Burrill could be my MLA soon. The Liberals allowed massive tuition hikes to take place, and Gary's NDP want to eliminate community college fees altogether. Gary's clearly the best choice for my neighbourhood.
If you oppose Harpers agenda you need to vote for parties that disagree with him. That means NDP or Greens.
My vote is cast strategically: it is a tool to advance policies and values that I support. A vote for the Liberals or Conservatives is not strategic if you support hard targets on greenhouse gas emissions, or having oil lobbyists out of government inner circles. If you want lower tuition fees, stronger public health care, public childcare, public pharmacare, and legal protections for trans people, you need to elect a party other than the liberals or conservatives. If you want to repeal bill c-51, you need to think a bit deeper than "stop Harper" and vote for the NDP or Greens.
"A year later, and McCluskey and other proud Dartmouth citizens are infuriated that outsiders would claim their land and change their identity without even having a vote.
“How would you feel if you worked hard to create something and then had the name changed?” McCluskey asks.
“Um...” replied thousands of years of Mi’kmaq culture."
I think he makes an important point, that gentrification is about ownership and not about consumer choices. Buying local sausages isn't what prices working-class people out of the homes they've rented for decades.
