Joanna Barker has only been playing music in public for about two years, her guitar-and-voice proficiency coming to light in living room jams with Newfoundland pals like Matthew Hornell and Michael Dalton while living in Antigonish. "I had three or four tunes I liked enough to show people," she says from St John's. "When I moved back to Newfoundland, I was living with my 84-year-old great aunt, sharing more and more, writing more and more. It was strange but good." By last Labour Day she was in the studio laying down her wry, finely wrought debut LP February with Dalton at the helm and a band full of talented friends. After the Halifax show she heads to Montreal where she'll hop on the train as part of Via's entertainment program, which will take her "all the way to Vancouver." --TT
