Jimmy Rankin

Back road paradise (Song Dog)

"Nobody said it was gonna be easy," Rankin sings in "Falling So Hard." He could be describing his solo career. Of course he's celebrated here at home. However, the goal is to be on country radio all over, because with this album he deserves it. The first single, "Cool Car," panders a bit. The title song, co-written with Patricia Conroy, is as catchy an exaltation of rural life as you'll hear. "Never Gonna Leave" recalls the brightest stompers with his siblings. Fellow Cape Bretoners Gordie Sampson and Stephen MacDougall co-wrote the hook-laden "Blame it All on You" with Rankin. Though Nashville is not as fond of tenors as it once was, it should wake up to this.
