Though he's best known as a member of Broken Social Scene, Jason Collett has been making solo records for a decade. He's got eight of them now, most available on Toronto major indie Arts & Crafts, and he's one of those guys with a lot of songs you don't realize you know until he's there in front of you singing them. (Last year at a North by Northeast panel it was revealed he is A&C's most licensed artist, no small feat considering the label's venerable roster includes Feist.) They're thoughtful and witty and sometimes flat-out great pop explosions. Years ago he and I were both panelists on The National Playlist, Jian Ghomeshi's pre-Q show, and I pitched Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" and he said I should be deported. But I'm over it, as long as he sings "I'll Bring the Sun" ("I'll bring the sun/I'll bring the sun/I'll bring the sun to you when I come").
