Itai Erdal is not an actor, although he is the star of How to Disappear Completely. He is a well-known lighting designer and an engaging storyteller who marries these two talents in a mixed media theatre show about (among other things) the death of his beloved mother, Mery. Documentary footage of Mery, as well as of Erdal’s sister and his childhood friend, is interspersed with conversational narration about the journey to come terms with his mother’s illness and to find his own happiness. Throughout, Erdal uses a handheld lighting device to make the audience privy to the “secrets” of lighting design, and uses lighting as a lovely metaphor for how he relates to people and events. The show is filled with observations both deceptively simple and profound, about friendship, love, life and death.
