Hibernation stations

When you're down in the dumps about winter, head to an underground hideout.

Alright winter, enough already. March just stormed in like a lion; we're beginning need a fix of spring, real bad. What better way to drown your seasonal sorrows and avoid the outdoors than to head below street level? Here are some places to hide out and drink up.

Rockbottom Brewery
5686 Spring Garden Road, 423-2938

This dark-but-welcoming stone-walled retreat can fool you into forgetting that it's still not spring. Slide into a big leather chair, put your feet up and enjoy one of Rockbottom's microbrews. Bucky, the bar's manager, suggests knocking back their Nut Brown or IPA and treating your ears to Thursday night open mic.

Fireside
1500 Brunswick Street, 423-5995

Another warm basement refuge, the Fireside heats it up with fireplaces and furniture you'd hope to have in your own living room. They mix up a mean martini that draw crowds on Mondays, but we happen to think this classy-but-comfy bar is the perfect hideaway for any day.

Henry House
1222 Barrington Street, 423-5660

Make your way down the narrow staircase to the bottom floor of this rustic restaurant and pub to find a homey retreat. This dimly-lit, brick-walled section of the British-style watering hole boasts booths to cozy up in as you enjoy a locally brewed pint. Beware, the cave-like features of this space may cause you to lose track of time and oatmeal stouts.
