Dear Mr. Connors, Mr. Eisses, Mr. Mackie, Mr. Martin, Mr. McCormack and Mr. Savage,See the full text of the petition here.I am pleased to attach a petition with 142 signatures asking you to make accessibility a central theme of your campaign for Mayor of HRM and for you to articulate your commitment to this goal.
The central issue is that Canada and all its levels of government are committed to identifying and removing barriers to access through Canada’s ratification of the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. HRM has taken no steps to honour this commitment. In fact, Halifax has policies that exempt certain businesses, like those in the Hydrostone Market in perpetuity. This is unacceptable in a modern and progressive city. How would you make this right?
Please recognize the good citizenship of the petition’s signers by responding to their request to state your position and by reading the sampling of thoughtful comments that follow. Voters take this issue seriously.
Thank you for your consideration.
Warren [Gus] Reed
