Three local salons get to the long and the short of summer hairstyles.

THE STYLIST: Amy Silver, owner of Vibe Salon for 12 years, stylist for 15.

Long hair model: Olivia
Silver got all fancy and chose an elegant “sorta” updo to showcase what’s hot for prom and wedding hair.

Short hair model: Vanessa
Vibe’s short look went a bit edgier, perfectly suited to their model, singer Vanessa Furlong from Three Sheet. “Shorter hair is really trendy and what people are looking for is short hair you can change up by styling it multiple ways.”

THE STYLISTS: Michael Phillips, stylist for five years. Owner and stylist at One Block Barbershop since January 2012. Robyn Brittany Touchie, stylist for six years, at One Block since January 2012.

Long hair model: Nicole
One Block looked at the popular degrade (or ombre) style through rose-coloured glasses with a dusty rose colour chalking technique. “We didn't touch this model’s hair with shears. We wanted the grown out look so we didn't mind her ends looking a little worn and torn. We demonstrated the fishtail braid for this look. This braid is so easy to do and looks mega cool.”

Short hair model: Genevieve
The bowls are back in town with One Block’s geometric bowl shape with a tight fade under-cut. “Any short haircut can be styled into this look. We applied a generous amount of firm-hold gel to her damp hair and placed it perfectly back with a fine-toothed comb. We love androgyny and this style goes seamlessly with our salon’s gender-neutral mantra.”

THE STYLIST: Kelly Welling, hairdresser for 10 years and stylist at Thumpers for three.

Long haired model: Alex
“We decided to keep the hair on the longer side. I took a razor to the underneath to take out some weight and just lightly texturized the top. With a deep side part and pushing the hair back this style stays in the ’90s prep theme that I just can’t get enough of these days. This cut can also be left to air dry and it is a perfect shaggy surfer dude/beach bum look.”

Short haired model: Nathan
“I chose a very short clippered look with lots of hair on top to play with. When styled with a blow dryer and some pomade it is a very classic look which is perfect for a night on the town. This cut can also be left to air dry with some light gel in it (to fight the Halifax frizz) and it is a perfect beach casual look.”
