GotAVoice’s brave new waves

Launching an internet radio station and a compilation album, two organizations put together a night of fun, music, film and fashion.

Kids from Halifax are coming out tonight to strut their stuff down a catwalk for the Got A Voice Internet Radio launch party.

Local rapper RealEyez is very excited. "We're mixing a talent show with a fashion show," she says. She and her agent pal Kayla Borden have been hard at work preparing the show to give kids, young and old, confidence to perform on stage.

Producer Jordan Metro plans on donning retro attire to walk down the aisle to the sound of his own beats. Young wordsmiths Seth Glasgow and the Yangsta (of Pirate Radio fame) will MC a night full of African drums, dancing and black culture and heritage trivia. There'll be a folk singer too (Dave Fultz), a high-school age rap prodigy (BenG) and of course, the city's strongest poet, El Jones.

The radio station's "underlying mandate is to pop the bubbles (of) organizations and arts communities in the north end," says Charlene Gagnon, director of operations at the station. It runs off Centreline Studios at the Uniacke Centre for Community Development on Gottingen Street.

Communities in Halifax are far too often bubbled from one another—which is a shame since it's such a tiny cosmopolis.

Gagnon says the station will run for a year to bring local music, community news and archived programming from the Gottingen 250th anniversary celebration. The North Community Health Clinic has pitched a weekly nutrition show and the Ceasefire program plans to provide weekly updates.

If things go really well, Gagnon muses, we might just hear Got a Voice on the FM dial years down the road. Funds raised will help produce the sequel to the YAC North End music compilation (pick up Vol. I at the event!) and the rest will go towards the station.
