Not quite a graphic novel, Vivek Shraya’s debut collection of short stories is as visually rich as it is textual. God Loves Hair is a contemporary Bildungsroman anthology of a young man coming to terms with his sexuality, religion and, well, his hair. Inspired by American author Leslie Feinberg’s Stone Butch Blues, Shraya couldn’t find himself represented in literature, so he wrote his own story. As a songwriter---he’s released five albums over the last decade---Shraya translates well to the page. He questions god, spirituality and gender in simple diction as sad as it is funny. Shraya speaks to the universal experience of carving out one’s own path---it’s most often stacked with awkwardness and shame yet somehow we overcome it.
