Prairie punks bring their brand-new album to Summersonic

Give Propagandhi a chance

We're living in the future. All-in-all it's a pretty cool future. But it's definitely the kind of future you can get bummed out about pretty easily. Michael Jackson is dead, Kim and Thurston aren't a thing anymore and there's an honest-to-gosh genre of music called seapunk (which may or may not have everything/nothing to do with punk). So everyone take a breath and travel back to a time before Ben Weasel started hitting women. Your pallies at Sonic Concerts have cooked up something real special to satisfy the pangs for nostalgia that are no doubt gurgling deep down inside your stomach at this very moment.

Everybody's favorite Prairie politicos Propagandhi are in town this Sunday for the Summersonic festival, and they're playing all the hits you and your friends used to terrorize families at the mall to.

Remember "Back to the Motor League?" Remember "I Was a Pre-teen McCarthyist?" Well it gets even better. The band just released its sixth full-length record, Failed States, on the colossally independent superlabel Epitaph. Not only does this mean Summersonicers will be among the first to take in the record live and in person, it means I'll have a whole bunch of new lyrics to scribble all over my fresh school supplies. Recorded in the band's hometown of Winnipeg, you can check out a full stream of the record on the band's Facebook page. It's a continuation of Propagandhi's trademark blend of metal/prog "riffiness" and thrashy skate punk, only it's handled much more dramatically than their sophomoric releases. If only Neil Peart were the type of guy to cut the sleeves off his Sabian jean jacket and turn it into a Sabian jean vest, he would probably be into this, big time.

So grab your board, stick some egg whites in your hair, call up your grade eight sweetheart and head over to the Garrison Grounds on September 9. In this age of supposed neo-sincerity, there's something comforting and maybe even wholesome about spending time with your friends and listening to "Stick the Fucking Flag Up Your Goddam Ass, You Sonofabitch." Yeah man! Fuck Ben Weasel and fuck seapunk too.

Summersonic, The Motorleague, The Stanfields, Propagandhi, The Vandals, Lagwagon, Rise Against, Sunday, September 9, 3:30, Garrison Grounds at Citadel Hill
