Gillian Welch | Music | Halifax, Nova Scotia | THE COAST

Published August 07, 2003.Gillian WelchSoul Journey (Stony Plain)After a trilogy of exceptional records, Americana goddess Gillian Welch releases her first mediocre disc. It's not a bad album, but she and partner David Rawlings lack passion. Some may cite the new use of organ, drums and electric bass as the problem, but the changes give a new depth to their sound, especially on the opening gem "Look at Miss Ohio." The writing sounds slack and weak, too bad since Welch is still one of the most eclectic and interesting songwriters around. —Trevor MacLaren
