Caledonia release new full-length CD, We Are America

The full-on DIY ethic of Halifax quintet extends to its new LP, We Are America, whis was funded in full by the band.

Zac Crouse is spending his rainy Sunday hand-screening t-shirts. “It’s fun, it just takes a lot longer,” the Caledonia bassist-singer-songwriter reports. “And it’s cheaper.” The DIY ethic extends beyond merch to every part of Caledonia---the Halifax quintet’s new LP, We Are America, was funded in full by the band. Recorded at Echo Chamber last summer, it was produced by Dylan Hudecki, a Toronto-scene vet who’s played in By Divine Right and is one of the founders of the collective recording project Junior Blue. After establishing a MySpace relationship, “Dylan came out to one of our shows in Toronto,” says Crouse. “He showed up on his bicycle in giant sunglasses.”

We Are America is a 14-song collection spanning multiple genres, from indie rock to country to bluegrass and all the side roads between each. The band’s genre dodging, once a source of frustration among its members---Crouse, Steve Gates, Kris Pope, Ian Bent and Steve Reble---has since been embraced. “Everything we do, it seems like we can’t fit into one category,” says Crouse. “That’s how it happened with us. Reble’s the one who was like, ‘We need one unified sound!’ But personally, I hate listening to albums that are one sound---you hear three songs and you know what’s next. For touring it really helps, because we can play all types of different venues.”

We Are America’s cover, painted by James Farrell, is an American flag with a maple leaf in place of the stars. “It’s sort of making fun of ourselves,” says Crouse, “how Canadians are smug and think we’re better than Americans. We’re not really, there’s just less of us. We’re still consuming as much as they are, we’re just as wasteful. And we wanted a title that people would remember.”
