Give what you can, take what you need, that's the way Halifax's Really Really Free Market works. No bartering, no trading...and not a penny exchanged. Really, you don't have to bring a thing but yourself. "I think it makes you realize, even if you don't have any extra 'stuff,' or even a roof over your head and shoes on your feet---you still have something valuable to contribute; and that can be literally anything,"says the event's organizer Sarah Ovens. "People can share their skills, talents or knowledge." Sunday's market won't just transform someone's trash into another person's treasure, tempt your tummy with baked goods and offer up loads of handmade goodness---you'll also be able to get your tarot cards read, get a haircut or a henna tattoo and much more. The Really Really Free Market isn't necessarily a new idea, but one that intrigued Ovens enough to share it with our fair city. "I think we live in a really individualistic culture, where competition is far more common than co-operation," she says. "But we don't need to depend on our jobs, stores and corporations or charities to get what we need...we have everything we need within our communities, and we can help ourselves and help the earth by just sharing and taking care of each other better." Go, give, take or just hang out. -Allison Saunders
