Episodes

Sunday nights (Showtime)

If there’s a lesson to be taken from Ricky Gervais’ performance as Golden Globes host (besides not pissing off the Scientologists), it’s that British and American humour is divided by more than an ocean of sharks. Perhaps Showcase’s Sunday night lineup---including the American remake of popular Shameless---is meant to bridge the post-colonial differences through the laugh track. Episodes is another inside Hollywood comedy, this time, as seen through the eyes of two snobbish British screenwriters, played by foppish Stephen Mangan and the Julie Andrews-sexy Tamsin Greig. Matt LeBlanc (Joey on Friends) is surprisingly fantastic, playing a caricature of himself. Still establishing its rhythm, Episodes isn’t nearly as biting as Curb Your Enthusiasm, but unfortunately with a few too many ’90s gags and one-liners thrown in, perhaps to make LeBlanc feel at home. The real joy, however, is Daisy Haggard, as the silent, unsmiling head of comedy whose face contorts in rotten-egg disgust.
