El Torpedoed

I have had numerous oppertunities to see Matt Mayes and El Torpedo play over the past couple of years, and have a lot to say in regards to this article. I am in touch with a few of his friends on a casual basis and know the ins and outs before others, and even though some of the band members have changed the style of the music has not strayed far from the beaten path. The most noticeable change within the group has been Matt himself. Every venue in Metro, including the Juno Big Leagues performance in Cole Harbour was incredible, however I just couldn't get past the whole vagrant look. Matt Mayes is an extremely attractive guy whom I have seen in a tux and if he looked like that on stage and in interviews his record sales would double. At some point in your career the, "It's all about the music," thing has to give a little. When the CD, When Angels Make Contact was released, some friends and I went down to Chester to see it at the Playhouse and It was something that I will never forget. I was so embarrassed for Matt that I was relieved that the rest of his band didn't have to endure the shame of the tour with him. I went home that night and couldn't sleep I was so angry and confused, I honestly think it would of been less humiliating for me to see him singing naked than in that burgandy nerd suit, the greased up hair and the black bugeyed sunglasses. Playing a character for your CD or not all I kept thinking was here's one of the best young singer/songwriters Nova Scotia is offering and he is committing carreer suicide, and as talented as Buck65 may be his wife is not the only reason he lives abroad, unfortunately for him that is the only place that seems to carry the appreciation for his ecclectic style of music. Matt Mayes and El Torpedo regardless of old or new bandmembers will continue to grow into a huge success as long as they keep Matt out of costumes and get him a stylist.
