DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND

Mark McQueen’s zombie flick may be a shameless 28 Days Later knock-off, but it does give the genre an absurdly fascinating tweak. In his movie, the people infected by a performance-enhancing drug gone wrong aren’t merely fast-moving flesh-eaters. They’re also nimble practitioners of parkour. Yep. Craig Fairbrass, Danny Dyer and MyAnna Burling lead the Londoners trying to escape the plague, with Burling’s character---the only drug trialist who hasn’t become a street obstacle course-running cannibal---representing a possible cure. A low-budget zombie film is more about the gory than the story, so it’s disappointing that Devil’s Playground serves up so little in the way of human innards. It does, however, introduce the concept of sporting movie monsters, so bring on the tennis-playing vampires and werewolf curlers.
