Deer Tick got labeled with the "alt-country" moniker early in its career, but the band's real sound, most would argue, is the rock and roll of its raucous, alcohol-fuelled live shows.

"It can be pretty chaotic," says keyboardist Robbie Crowell. "I think the Halifax show will be pretty nuts."

It'll be a special gig for Crowell in particular: the first time he's been able to bring Deer Tick to the city he's called home for most of the past decade. A staple of the Halifax scene---playing sax in the Mellotones, hosting Monday Night Jazz at the Shoe Shop, among countless other gigs---Crowell joined Deer Tick in 2010, flying out regularly to tour and record with the band. He finally relocated last month to Nashville, where lead singer John McCauley lives.

"I knew I had to move somewhere in the States, and that seemed like the best option: people I knew and a place I could potentially work," he says. "There's a lot going on there, too, beyond the stock country thing. Lots of good rock bands."

Deer Tick's most recent full-length, 2011's Divine Providence, perfectly captured the band's raw live sound, and Crowell expects to start working on a follow-up shortly. But right now, he's most excited about playing a favourite old haunt.

"I'm really looking forward to playing the Marquee," he says. "I haven't played there in years. I used to live around the corner when I first moved to Halifax, and I'd be up there every night for Hell's Kitchen pizza and watching whatever band was playing."
