Day of the Triffids

Directed by Nick Copus (eOne)

Another crack at John Wyndham’s 1951 novel, this two-part BBC-TV production modernizes the cold-war sci-fi tale, where the predatory, ambulatory plants are the source of renewable green energy. But a solar storm across the planet blinds all who watches it, leaving people vulnerable to the aloe-like creepers. Fans of camp and big-budget disaster movies will find quite a bit to enjoy in the first half, especially with a stellar cast of British thesps including Eddie Izzard and Joely Richardson. But when the dreary family politics of the second part kick in, you’ll be praying the weeds reach through your screen and put you out of your misery. And don’t expect too many scares, not when the villainous plants all look like Dame Edna Everage.
