David Myles

Live at St. Matthew's United Church

If you listen to CBC Radio as much as I do, then you have no trouble identifying David Myles. His 2006 International Songwriting Competition-winning song "When It Comes My Turn" (which took first place in the folk/singer-songwriter category) received a lot of airplay before and after his win. I admit, I wasn't overly keen on the winning tune, and perhaps that's just a result of too many listens. Nonetheless, I was impressed with David's live performance. His on-stage banter is warm, witty and genuine, and the tunes demonstrate that he isn't a one-song wonder. CBC programmers, please play some of his other material.

We learned that his family was in the audience (his brother was even wearing a David Myles tshirt, just like J.Lo's family members wear J.Lo tshirts to award shows), that he's allergic to his new apartment and that he was thrilled to be opening for headliner Joel Plaskett. The audience was responsive and appreciative throughout, though there was one awkward but funny moment. In between songs, a young woman belted out "Take your bow!" Which to someone unfamiliar with David's catalogue might sound like he'd overstayed his welcome. She hastily added "Play that." Yeah, "Take Your Bow" is one of his tunes, and play it he did.

I'm sorry I missed opening act Forest City Lovers (supper took too long), but I heard they were lovely. My loss.
