On an Island
(Columbia)
The world has not seen much of David Gilmour since The Division Bell was released as a (wink) Pink Floyd album in 1994. So don’t feel bad if this solo release seems to have come out of nowhere. The disc that finds Gilmour writing better material than he demonstrated over the last two “Floyd” releases combined. Gilmour is seldom found quoting old solo phrasings or falling back on Floydian tricks that have since become cliches. As for his soloing, it is good to see that he can still astound with his Fender Strat. While this album is unlikely to blow anyone away, it is a solid re-affirmation that David Gilmour is one of the most distinctive guitar voices of any generation.
