The constant melodious repetition of simple jingles that plod through most of Crystal Castles’ debut creates a charming ambient sound reminiscent of Air’s Moon Safari. The chilled electro-pop sprawls rise and fall, simmer and burst, often finding great dance grooves like “Air War” and “Courtship Date.” Though highly listenable, electro-punk tracks like “XXZXCUZX ME” derail the upbeat vibe created throughout the rest of the album. More for the turntable or iPod than the CD player, with 16 tracks crammed with incredible synth hooks, bumping beats and Alice Glass’ vocals, Crystal Castles’ debut is a valuable addition to any library.
