Buy art for the Skatepark

Artists, musicians and skaters are raising funds to give the Halifax Common skatepark some well-deserved love.

Go bananas over board-art like this.

Thanks to five years of wear and tear, the Halifax Common skate park is in need of a little TLC, and some park regulars have dug in up to their elbows to help make it happen. "Just like ball fields and tennis courts, skate parks are now part of the list of facilities that cities and towns need to have," says one of the event's masterminds, Jon Swinamer. "The Common's skate park is packed all day, every day, all spring, summer and fall. It quite literally is a community centre." The annual art auction will once again leave you wanting to redecorate, showcasing over 30 works from artists close to the cause. But this year, the fundraiser will be kicked up a notch. As it turns out, Pro Skates is turning into a new hotspot for events, and they'll happily host the opening night of the auction, complete with a live music "throw-down," a backlot motorcycle showcase, and of course the beginning of the bidding wars. Funds raised will help fix up the park, but also will hopefully contribute to new additions like a quarter pipe.
