Bram Stoker’s Dracula: Collector’s Edition

Francis Ford Coppola

Bram Stoker’s Dracula: Collector’s Edition
Directed by: Francis Ford Coppola
In 1992, this was taken as an AIDS metaphor. Today, that seems like a stretch. Francis Ford Coppola’s gorgeous ode to old-school horror filmmaking needs no excuses. Avoiding any special effects techniques unavailable at the time of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 Nosferatu, Coppola gives this tale of immortal desire a huge theatricality. For some reason, the new DVD desaturates the film’s bold colour palette, but the commentary and behind-the-scenes stuff is worthwhile.
