Big White Praise

To the editor,

Re: Big White Kuckles, reviewed by Sue Carter Flinn, October 18. I was surprised and happy to see an honest-to-goodness book review in last week's Coast. Sue's review was extremely well done---not one of these bewildering book summary "reviews" or an out-and-out trashing of the book based on the reviewer's bugbears and personal beefs with, say, Canadian realist fiction. Sue explained the things she liked and identified what she saw as its weakness. Like Big White Knuckles, the review was a really good read.

The Coast occasionally covers Atlantic Canadian book news---the recent article on Newfoundland writer MB Hallett, the review of the corporate history of Ganong, and call-outs in "The Dope Show," for example. As a local independent publisher, I've often wondered why there isn't more support from The Coast for locally produced books. Your annual "Best of Books" is great, but books from national and multi-national publishing companies and conglomerates capture all the spots on the list. Books shouldn't be read or reviewed simply because they have been published (or published locally, for that matter), but because they are well written and well worth the time it takes to read them.

There are a good number of local publishers who accomplish this every season. Please check out for more information.
