Kim MacInnes may be shy, but her friendly smile at Finbar’s Irish Pub packs a punch. “It helps to know their names and what they like to drink as well, I suppose,” she says of her customers and delivering the best service. This October will mark MacInnes’ fifth year working at the pub. The 31-year-old applied for the job when she moved by herself from small-town Antigonish to big-city Halifax and was worried about feeling alone. “I thought I might as well make some money while I meet some people, and I never looked back since,” she says. MacInnes has since found work at a commercial insurance company, but still maintains a part-time job at Finbar’s: the atmosphere, owners and patrons were too great to give up.
