Newsstands are a dying business in North America—you’ll be hard-pressed to find one at all, even in Manhattan—but Halifax’s Atlantic News, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last month, continues run strong. The secret to its success? “Halifax is an incredibly well-read town,” says owner Michele Gerard, “and we have unbelievably loyal customers.” Of course, Gerard’s amazing stock (Atlantic News carries 5,000 different titles, with up to five new titles arriving every week), old-school attitudes about customers (“you’re welcome to browse and hang out”) and ever-engaging staff is keeping those customers loyal.
