Cam Smith is in your internets, being funny, talented and generally engaging. He credits this late night ICQing (or its modern-day equivalent) to today’s success, both in this poll and otherwise. “I think 10 years ago it was about the bars and lyricism, and that’s still important,” says Smith. “But all that talent and power now needs to be felt through your YouTube, Instagram, Twitter. A great MC is one that can change with the times and use new technology to their advantage.” And he does it all for you. “There have been so many times that I’ve been out grabbing a coffee, having a shitty day, stressing about the music. [And] someone will come up to me and say ‘Are you Cam Smith?’ and tell me how much they love the music and what I’m doing,” he says. “I don’t think any words could describe how good that feels. I just want to say thank you.” Two thousand fourteen is already a big year for Smith---he’s showcasing at East Coast Music Week (including the gala awards show), Canadian Music Week, performing with Travi$ Scott in Toronto, and gird your loins for his brand new album, Cannon, coming in May.
