Before Pete’s became the latest jewel in the Sobeys empire. Before the confident rebranding that turned Pete’s Frootique into straight-up Pete’s. Before the flagship Bedford Frootique expanded (and ended up losing some of its thunder to) the downtown Halifax location. And sometime after Pete Luckett emigrated from the UK to seek his fortune, just a guy in Saint John—as Information Morning host Don Connolly (see Best Radio Show) put it on the occasion of the sale to Sobey—with a banana in his pocket. That’s when Luckett drew a devoted following to the food products he imported from England, so much that the Bedford store still has a dedicated “Best of Britain” section. In Halifax, the appreciation of international imports is more stitched into the fabric of the store. On nearly every shelf you can find some far-flung product, from Chinese black rice ramen to South African chutney to the German pickled peppers Pete’s picked. It’s wunderbar!
