Mocean Dance’s win comes in its 15th year as one of the city’s leading dance companies. “We’re glad our friends recognize the hard work and perseverance,” says co-artistic director Sara Coffin, who’s also celebrating the return of the Best Dance Company category. “It has been gone since 2008,” she says. “There are 20 professional companies in the city, so we’re just as vibrant as theatre.” Mocean is a finalist for this weekend’s Masterworks Award, and on November 18 will premiere Burnwater:Alchemy in Shelburne. “We’re hoping Mocean becomes part of the everyday life in Halifax,” says Coffin. “It’s important to us when people read the Best of and read about their favourite restaurant, yoga studio, theatre—that dance is part of what they’re consuming.”
