Best Councillor

Dawn Sloane

“We’re getting F.R.E.D. on steroids,” gushes Dawn Sloane. She’s not talking about the fitness regime of Fred Connors, owner of FRED. beauty food art. She’s on about more Free Rides Everywhere Downtown, the six new hybrid busses that will run through downtown gratis all year round starting in 2009. In terms of accomplishments in the past year, she’s pleased that the Farmers’ Market got its funding, Common’s Watch started, and the support for skating rinks at the George Dixon Centre and at the Common. She also helped host the first Halifax St. Patrick’s Day Parade since 1940. Plus, there was Tunes at Noon, the partnership with the Downtown Business Association and Music Nova Scotia that brought 21 local performers to play in the Grand Parade during lunch hours this summer. And, of course, just was reelected after a hard-fought campaign. Not a bad year, Dawn.

1st Runner-up: Sheila Fougere

2nd Runner-up: Sue Uteck
