With its string of gold wins broken only by the occasional silver, you might not think it could get any better for Cyclesmith. But last November the biking boutique moved from its longtime shop on Quinpool Road to a gorgeous storefront in the liquor store’s building on Agricola Street. “We’re loving our new space,” says co-owner Mark Beaver. “The neighbourhood is a lot of fun.” Today’s store is brighter, roomier and has better (car) parking, making it feel like a huge step up even though the footprint is barely bigger than on Quinpool. Another thing that’s good for the business is Halifax’s slow-but-steady embracing of cycle transit. “The city is getting more bike-friendly every year,” Beaver says. Infrastructure like bikes lanes gets more people riding. And the more people ride, the more cycling infrastructure they demand. Then more people ride. You could say it’s a virtuous cycle.
