Don’t worry, Halifax, El Jones will be back. The award-winning spoken-word artist, professor and outgoing poet laureate left Canada this summer for the prestigious International Writing Program at the University of Iowa (eat your heart out, Hannah Horvath). Despite the success, the city isn’t far from her thoughts. “I think there’s a strong sense of community in Halifax,” she says, giving shout-outs to her fellow activists Evan Coole, iMove and the Uniacke Centre for Community Development. “You know the people you’re working with. You know what the goals are...I don’t feel that’s so strong elsewhere.”
