A gigantic glass stairwell and 6,000 biodegradable balloons sounds like a recipe for a good time, and Melissa Marr and Heather Wilkinson intend to keep the party going all night, with audience participation, of course. "We will be sending balloons to the peak of the structure and watching them tumble down and settle in a casing along the windows," says Wilkinson. "Gradually this column of balloons will rise and glow and---with any luck---be seen from the ferry and maybe even on the other side of the harbour."
Craig Gallery's fine arts programmer Kim Farmer planted the seed of the stairwell as a perfect location and the pair were all for it. "Heather and I were really excited about the possibilities and the opportunity to work on such a large scale. We loved the grid, and the openness of the stairwell," says Marr. "We are inspired by the way Nocturne allows people to be open to finding art in unexpected places; we imagine Barometer as a gauge of this excitement---transforming a space, if only for a night."
