Aziza’s charms

The world famous bellydancer makes a brief stop in Halifax, one night only.

This is just one woman's opinion, but when the universe offers you a chance to see a performance from someone who has held the title of "bellydancer of the universe," you go.

Laura Selenzi and Monique Ryan of Serpentine Studios—the cornerstone of Halifax's thriving bellydance scene—are bringing the world famous bellydancer Aziza (and many other dancers) to town for a series of workshops and a one-night-only performance.

"We try to bring in internationally renowned teachers in once a year, and she's been our top choice for a long time, she's one of the best," says Selenzi. "We were just waiting for a gap in her schedule. She just came back from Budapest, before that she was in France, after our event she's going to Greece. She's highly in demand, we're lucky to have her."

The Portland, Oregon-born, Montreal-based Aziza describes her dance style as American cabaret—traditional style bellydance evolved to suit Western audiences. Selenzi says she has a "modern edge, but she's not fusion, she polishes it up a bit, adds flashy details."

Having trained in bellydance since 1987, Aziza supplements her touring schedule with workshops and masterclasses, and her skill in the medium comes through in both her performances and teaching style. "One of the reasons I love her performances is that she's skilled and elegant and adds in humour in interesting ways. It's cute and interactive," says Selenzi. "She's a wonderful teacher. She's kind and funny and has clever ways of teaching. You're having fun and then before you know it you're doing moves you didn't know you could do."
