Atlantic Fashion Week night one recap

Old favourites shine among Halifax's emerging designer talents.

Last night, the Mercedes Benz showroom on Kempt Road was driven by another type of power: the exceptional talent of young, east coast fashion designers. Now to me, Kempt Road might as well be New Brunswick (pretty happy tonight's at Hunter Street), but I'll admit that the industrial, high-ceilings and steel beams work well as a backdrop for this type of event. That said, I couldn't help but imagine what a fashion show would look like in the empty Roy building space, where the ArtRising party was held a couple of years ago. Someone, please do this.

The evening was divided in half between NSCAD and non-NSCAD designers, and you didn't need an art school degree to pick out which students have been exposed to conceptual thinking and theory. But there were some common ground for spring 2010: feminine silhouettes, a romantic longing for a bohemian past mixed with a contemporary mind for sustainable clothing.

It's always exciting to see new designers at these events, but it's even more thrilling to watch old favourites improve and really develop a cohesive, stand-out style that's true to their unique personalities and values. Chloe comme parris (Chloe and Parris Gordon whose leather and feather earring I wore in Toronto on a recent trip, and received numerous compliments from strangers), Alison Seary, Akshay Tyagi and Stiks by Rustik (Danica Olders)
