The Art In Fest festival brings a visual arts component to the Obey Convention underground music festival, adding five sound and media-based projects to the festival (including Emily Pelstring's Khyber exhibition and performance as The Powers). All projects are new work created specifically for the festival—Khyber director and Art In Fest director Hannah Guinan has been seeking out new work to fit into OBEY.
Photographer and former Haligonian Francesca Tallone's piece, Slow Moving Liquid, is a video comprised of shots of waves crashing on different shores that plays with the viewer's senses of timing and rhythm. Tallone's video will screen at the Bus Stop Theatre and also serve as a backdrop for a spoken word performance by artist Tim Dunn on Saturday.
Local media and performance artists Kyle Martens and Brandon Brookbank recently moved into a new apartment; instead of immediately becoming a living space, their apartment will serve as a studio this month, open to viewers over the weekend from 12-5pm. The two artists collaborate on video and performance work, using banal objects and situations; Peel looks to "deconstruct pieces of identity" and "contrast reality against fiction."
Halifax artist, musician and NSCAD prof Craig Leonard is enigmatic about his piece, sfz, an "aeolian percussive installation" built along the waterfront between Pier 22 and Pier 24. Leonard, who has played in groups Catbag and Guilt, says only, in verse, "I've chased the distant knocking for years/I feel it's elfin/or twelve posts wearing wires." The installation, ongoing all weekend, is meant to be experienced at dusk or nighttime. Guinan recommends it for festival-goers needing a break from the crowd.
