Apocalypto

Mel Gibson

Apocalypto
Directed by: Mel Gibson
Buena Vista
An historically inaccurate, gratuitously violent movie about the end of Mayan civilization made by a documented racist---all of which led to the rash dismissal and misunderstanding of Apocalypto. But this film is great by virtue that it’s made by a madman. Mel Gibson isn’t aspiring to textbook history, but an abstraction of humankind made so merciless that Earth starts looking like another planet. Watching how Gibson brings silent film techniques to the action format on TV doesn’t compare to how it played in theatres, but it’s a necessary compromise.
