Melancholy steeped in sardonic reflection distinguishes Get Way Back. Its timing benefits from renewed interest in early R&B. Mayfield's performing career was cut short by a nasty car accident, but his songs are overdue for new ears. Garrett skips the obvious, "Hit the Road Jack." "Lost Mind" and "River's Invitation" are among the familiar tunes, with Garrett's sly fretwork and soothing baritone needing only shade and a cool drink to complete them.
